Another way to go, which could be used to supplement other photography endeavors, is stock photography. There are people I know that make a good living at only doing stock (though I fear like other professional photography areas, an over abundance of people submitting to stock agencies is causing prices to drop).

Easiest to "get into" is portrait and wedding (general high st. photographer).
Easy as you just set yourself up - stick a few ads in papers and the like and away you go.
Whether or not you get customers (and hence a "good wage") is a different matter.

Fashion is fickle and the magazines tend to use people they already know, to get into it is a lot of hard work pounding the streets to the publishers/fashion houses.
Same with any other type of photography which involves being published in magazines etc.
References :
Fashion photography? Seriously? I never see any creativity there. Just over the top stuff.

Press photography. In the ever integrated world, newspapers want to be everywhere at once. It's one of the few areas that still allow freelance pretty liberally. You can also try weddings and event photography, but know your stuff. You won't have a chance to reshoot, you have to get the shot.
References :
portrait photography.
only needs a small studio space with minimal equipment and props. the key is location, location, location to generate walk-in traffic and minimize advertising costs... mall, busy shopping center, etc. if your setup is portable you can also easily shoot school dances, senior portraits, etc on location.

the money isnt in the photography. its in selling prints.
References :
Product.

Sears, McDonalds, even Yahoo! needs photographers to make images of products.

On second thought, perhaps local, site specific photography such as weddings, ball games and school portraiture might be even more available.

For the most part, except for a very select few, professional photography is dead.
