I am really into photography and am studying it at degree level at the moment. I enjoy fashion photography but I am aware that this is THE hardest business to get into and it is very unlikely, with all the stiff competition, that you would become successful.
What other category is, not easy per say, but generally easier to get into, with a good wage?

Thanks in advance.

Easiest to "get into" is portrait and wedding (general high st. photographer).

Easy as you just set yourself up – stick a few ads in papers and the like and away you go.
Whether or not you get customers (and hence a "good wage") is a different matter.

Fashion is fickle and the magazines tend to use people they already know, to get into it is a lot of hard work pounding the streets to the publishers/Fashion houses.
Same with any other type of photography which involves being published in magazines etc.

Underwater photography is extremely interesting and lots of fun. People do not usually get to take pictures of the wildlife living underwater. There are a number of living thing underwater. There are those that move around like the fish and the sharks, and there are those that are immobile like the corals. Because of the number of subjects available underwater, underwater photography has become one of the most popular forms of photography.

There are a number of digital cameras that can be used underwater. The internet is full of pictures that deal with the underwater. This is largely due to the fact that people can now take cameras underwater and shoot the subjects there.

But it isn’t as easy as it sounds. You cannot just take a camera, dive into the sea, and start clicking. You need to know where and how to take the pictures. There are a number of underwater pictures that are horrible beyond measure as one cannot make out anything in it. Sunlight has a different effect underwater and one needs to make sure that photos are not taken directly under a sunray.

If taken in the right manner, underwater pictures can be truly beautiful. There is a set of paraphernalia you need to carry with you while going underwater. These include different cameras, lights and camera holders.

The ocean is the best place to take underwater pictures. Ponds and lakes are, more often than not, too dirty and murky with mud to allow you to see anything clearly. On the other hand, the ocean is very clear, and taking underwater pictures is relatively easier due to the absence of the pollution.

When diving, there are certain differently designed cameras that you should opt for. These cameras take amazing photographs as the pictures are hundreds of feet underwater where it is usually difficult to take pictures. Very often, the images show strange creatures that have not yet been discovered.

Apart from the aquatic life forms, it is also enjoyable to take photographs of people underwater. If you can capture the right moment, you can catch people making some really funny underwater expressions. People on vacation usually take pictures of each other underwater. There are a number of people who visit Florida and take pictures with the manatees swimming by. Underwater pictures taken by oneself is a great family keepsake and an amazing way to share your experiences with friends and relatives.

Underwater photography is made even more interesting due to the unpredictable nature of water. A lot of unexpected pictures come out due to this. These pictures are rare and so are really special, as one cannot recreate the environment in which caused the photograph to turn out the way it did. With advancement in camera technology, underwater photography will keep progressing. Today, one can even take underwater pictures from boat. With time, we will get to see a range of special underwater pictures from the ocean and perhaps even some creatures that have never before been identified.

Underwater photography is gaining popularity, especially with people who are on vacations near the ocean. It is not necessary to have a lot of experience to practice underwater photography and just about anyone can do it. You never know, perhaps your underwater exploits can inspire others to take up underwater photography and you could be the role model for somebody else. If you are taking a vacation, be sure to include underwater photography in your agenda.

I would like to start a small photography Business…nothing major as I am an amateur photographer and am not sure of myself/skills yet. I do think that I take pretty decent photos and have a great passion for photography but don’t really know how to begin. What kind of fairly inexpensive camera is a good start? I do have a Sony Digital Camera and a Canon SLR 35mm. Also, what other kind of equipment is imperative when beginning-just to look like you know what your doing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
One more thing before I forget, what is needed to take great photos of food/wine? Is there a special kind of setup that I would need?

You may not like this answer but it is intended to be honest and helpful. Don’t start any business, not even a small one, until you are sure of what you are doing. Apart from the risk to your reputation through failing to deliver you may be liable to losses. Don’t buy more kit until you are a little closer to knowing what you want to photograph – make the most of what you have by learning to use it to it’s best. Equipment can cost a lot, especially when more specialised – much food photography for example needs larger format than 35mm or high end digital to get published and lighting is essential and expensive.

Look at as many good quality published or exhibited pictures of your subject as you can. Visit exhibitions showing your subject and if possible get to know other photographers – perhaps through a club – that can help build your technical skills.

As your skills grow you will stretch your equipment until the day comes when you will either know or have a good idea of what extra kit you need.

When your skills and knowledge develop you will be in a much more ablle position to take on jobs which, at the beginning, you might do for free but without risk of liability, until your confidence grows. Then think about the business side of things.

Good luck

A lot depends on the clients.

Getting a professional look to your landscape photographs then, is as much a challenge as it is a pleasure when the praise starts coming in: realistic, awesome or inspiring results can be achieved with the right lighting and angles but it does call for patience and some amount of dedicated practice to learn the use of basic equipment and techniques of outdoor photography.

The techniques of outdoor landscape photography differ vastly from indoor or studio photography techniques and so does the lighting and equipment needed to get good results. Once, the hobby photographer has learned the importance of using the right equipment in the correct manner, landscape photography is no longer a mystery to someone who applies the knowledge of art and a passion for capturing a landscape in a way that it speaks to the observer.

You too can learn to deliver artful messages to the viewer through your work, the way in which you present a shot or series of shots so that it moves your viewer to feel something for the work. Whatever message you want to portray should be clear to the viewer through the mood setting dominant in your landscape photograph and so the main details you need to pay special attention to are the kind of lighting you are focusing the camera angle in, existence of any shadows (sometimes even shadow-plays give great results for a dreamy, fantastic or even mystical mood setting, but this requires a lot of practice to achieve – and sometimes, just weather-luck) besides necessary equipment.

If you choose to use B/W film for landscape, this is a really demanding medium for the photography of nature since true artistry is difficult to attain through this as there is little reliance on colors beyond black and white and so the dependence of the picture looking eye-catching is mostly on any shadows the image creates. This is why composition is an important part of landscape photography: the picture should have certain sharp edges, tones and textures to alleviate the sense of lacking colors but still having character.

The foundation of B/W photography is getting the camera to capture what the eye actually views in color and also to highlight a definite portion and let shadows play on another section; varied angles of buildings and water have made for great black and white photography in the past and you can try your luck with this aspect too.

On the other hand, even trees and rocks, bridges and natural ridges, land formations and man-made buildings against a natural backdrop make for an interesting contrast say, like contradictions existing peacefully alongside and so draw the eye to this play of opposites.

A photographer can use various angles to give a sharp or even soft contrast to the effect one desires and evoke definite emotion in the viewer simply by allowing for a touch of color play, if taking to color photography in subtle tones. Natural lighting required for landscape photography makes for easier candid shots to be captured by color films and thus, many hobbyists prefer taking up Digital photography that allows them to evaluate the quality of the picture before committing it to print as the LCD screen shows them most important aspects of the picture’s focus, which goes a long way to ensure a perfect picture.

So, as an amateur photographer, you need to put in some amount of practice with your basic photography equipment and learn best angles, focus points, time of day and spots to pick out for getting consistent results each time – to breathe in life into your landscape photos!

What does the artistic and technical side(s) of photography mean? What are some examples and types of artistic / technical photgraphy? Anyone have any websites???

You could probably get as many different answers as people who answer. To *me* artistic Photography is working to create a vision in the mind. In other words, you are MAKING a photo, not just TAKING a photo. Your intention is to create a mood or depiction of a scene that goes beyond the "normal" view. Your goal is to physically create with the photo the idea, mood, or image you have in your mind.

I think of technical photography as product shots in which you are capturing the pure physical aspects of something with no vision in mind. Even documentary photography could be called technical photography as it is the capturing of moments or events without necessarily any previous thought or plan. Of course there are many very powerful, artistic documentary photos, but again, the photograher did not usually go out with some vision in mind… the circumstances of the event and his skill with the camera created the art of the photo.

Again… just my take on things. Here is my website if you want to browse. There are photos there that I would say could fall into either catagory. Some of them were ideas in my head that I worked to create with the camera, others were more or less simply putting on film what was before my eyes at the time, though I try to see some art in anything I shoot.

How and where can I find photography jobs?

Posted by admin | 03/03/10 | Tagged Photography

Im looking to find a photography job. Photography is my passion and I am quite good at it. How can I make money from my photography? Any jobs going? And can i email my photos to people for money rather than seeing them in person.

Is ebay good to make money from photos?

Hi,

ebay can and will make you some money.

If you want to make some real money though you should look at getting involved with http://www.digicamcash.com

This is a fantastic photography job and my best mate has made some impressive earnings from it. I just started last week and have made 3 sales so far.

Should I start my own business in photography?

Posted by admin | 01/03/10 | Tagged Photography

I work at a portrait studio now and have been in photography for the last 8 years, part of me wants to go to school and learn enough about photography and how to run a small business. The other part is worried that Photography is a dying business with so many people doing their own photography with digital cameras & photoshop. Is it worth all that school ,money & time?

the abillity to produce great images in the camera is a dying art as people think great images are made from hours in the computer,

do what you feel is the right thing to do
