An ounce of prevention towards wellness -

Learn the simple steps to living a healthier and happier life!

Concern over health and how to improve your health has become a topic more and more of us think about and try to implement in our lives. Advances in medicine have helped us live longer lives and have allowed us to overcome some of the ills and infections that used to kill many people. Vaccines have helped prevent illness and death. They have eliminated diseases like smallpox and have helped against rabies, diphtheria and the plague.

However, we have started to incur a new host of health problems due to the length of our life, the processed Foods we eat, the fast paced lives we live and the chemicals that pollute our world. Every day we see new commercials on TV about the next great drug that will make your life better or healthier. But do you actually listen to the list of possible side effects. Are these drugs really helping or just creating different problems. Remember, no pharmaceutical company ever made money by curing you quickly so you could stop taking their pills.

Why wait until you feel poorly before you see a doctor that will only work on alleviating your symptoms and not on fixing the underlying problem. Start achieving wellness and begin improving your health before you get to the point you need to see a doctor. Work on improving your overall wellness.

As the old adage says “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Of the leading causes of death in the United States, many can be prevented. The likelihood of contracting heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues can be directly impacted by the choices we make every day. The choices about what we put into our bodies and the choices we make that affect our personal environment.

Here are some things you can do to increase your wellness and start down the path to improve your health:

Diet and Nutrition – Your diet does a lot in determining your overall health and wellness. What you put into your body does make a difference. “It’s easy to buy into some pretty popular nutrition misconceptions — myths and half-truths that ultimately find us making far fewer healthier food choices than we realize,” says New York University nutritionist Samantha Heller, MS, RD.

Read labels, don’t trust all the advertising and always try to get whole foods and not processed substitutes.

The same goes for your supplements. Get those that are made from natural ingredients and aren’t over processed. Every vitamin and mineral and phytochemical in our body works in concert with one another, and it’s easy to knock that balance off. Be sure the supplements you are taking are balanced and introduced to your body in a way that they are usable and work together as nature intended.

Some of the things you want to make sure you get enough of in your diet are fiber, antioxidants, soy, and water. These things along with a well balanced nutritional intake of whole foods and supplements can go a long way in improving health and increasing wellness.

Weight – Maintaining a healthy weight is critical to improving health. You don’t have to be as thin as a rail – this is actually just as unhealthy as being overweight – you just need to keep the excess in check.

It all begins with attitude. Start by changing how you feel about yourself, your body and your eating habits. Change to a can do attitude where you start to do what’s right for you. Simple moderate exercise, eating a healthy breakfast (no skipping allowed), reducing your calorie intake by not taking just one more are all small things we can do to get in better health by being at a better weight.

Don’t go for the fad diets that don’t work or at best get you to lose weight for a while but then just put it back on later. A slow and steady change will help you lose the weight and keep it off and it will be much healthier for you.

Get plenty of whole foods, protein (quite often a good soy protein can give you what you need without adding fat to your diet) and drink lots of water. Water is critical to the health and wellness of your body. It helps rid you of toxic build up and it is needed for normal cell processes to work. Another side effect of water is that it can make you feel full without adding the calories so you will eat less.

Exercise – Aerobic exercise is very important to maintaining your wellness and improving your health. It has been linked to cancer prevention, reduction of osteoporosis, helping with depression, lowering the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and of course obesity and weight control. It can also help with cognitive functions – meaning you can think more clearly and work more efficiently.

Aerobic exercise makes most of us think of joining a gym or having to run several miles every day. This is just not the case. You can keep it very simple and still achieve benefits. Walking is one of the best exercises out there. It is simple, easy on the joints, doesn’t cost us a lot of money and it can be done pretty much anywhere. To get a benefit from walking, you just need to make sure that it is aerobic. That means you want to walk at a pace that leaves you feeling “warm and slightly out of breath”. One good way to start is the 5 out 5 back plan. Just walk 5 minutes away from the house and then you are force to walk 5 minutes back. Increase the time out as your health and fitness increase.

Stress Management – Most of us live with some type of stress every day. It has just become part of our lives. It has also become one reason we don’t always feel our best and why we are susceptible to feeling run down and ’sick’.

Reducing stress can help now and our long term health. Stress keeps our bodies from functioning at their best and slowly wears on us. Find way to relax, to have that ‘me’ time where the pressures of the day can be pushed aside.

Try to simplify your life. Our world has become so fast paced and ‘in your face’ – ‘do it now’ that we just don’t have time to sit and watch the clouds or the rain or…. One simple way to gain a little sanity is to disconnect from the fast pace, try just turning off the cell phone. Just leave it behind for an hour.

But, no matter how much we work on getting rid of the stresses in our life there will always be something that causes us stress. Luckily, there are ways to help us overcome the stress nutritionally.

Avoiding Toxins – With all of our advances and science and technology, man has come up with many great things to improve our quality of life. However, we are learning that some of these things that are there to improve actually produce side effects that can hurt us and our health – now and in the future.

The EPA has warned that indoor air pollution is more of a concern than the pollution we find outside. Many cleaners as well as skin and beauty products actually contain harmful toxins.

There are companies out there that do produce green cleaners that are safe for people and for the environment. Read labels and know what your beauty and cleaning products contain.

One of the best ways to maintain your health is to wash your hands. We touch so many different things with our hands things that might have been cleaned with toxins or touched by something unhealthy that by just washing, you can cut down on many unwanted health effects.

Adequate Sleep – Giving your body the sleep it requires is a great way to keep it healthy. During sleep your body regenerates and rejuvenates. It is absolutely imperative to get enough sleep, but getting more doesn’t always mean you are getting better quality sleep.

Quit Smoking – Despite the many warnings and the known health risks smoking is still prevalent around the world. Quitting this habit can not only improve your health drastically and improve your chances of preventing future disease; it can relieve you of a financial burden. Just think if you applied all the money you spend on cigarettes on healthy nutritional supplements how much you could increase your health and wellness.

Its not always the difficult path that is required for change. Quite often making a few simple changes in our lives can make dramatic results.

Think about it!

I own a Business (LLC) with two other people. It is only us three; we do not have any additional employees. We pay for our health insurance through our business. Based on these facts, I was wondering how much I stand to save on my personal taxes. Is this a standard write off like any other business expense or does the IRS treat health insurance differently?

Multiple member LLC’s can be taxed 3 different ways:

1. As a partnership
2. As a C corporation
3. As an S Corporation

The deductability of health insurance premiums for your LLC will depend on which of the 3 types of entities your LLC elected to be taxed at (the default is the partnership form of taxation).

Typically, you will be able to deduct 100% of your health insurance premiums although there are some specials considerations for owner/officers of S Corporations who own more than 2% of the company.

If you speak with a CPA or qualified tax advisor they should be able to give you plenty of good tips. One thing that you may want to mention is a medical reimbursement plan. Here is some more detail on medical reimbursement plans:

How does health insurance work in terms of payment?

Posted by admin | 15/03/10 | Tagged Health

Let’s say there’s a family, and there’s three different prescriptions for different medications within the family. Let’s say the Dad is paying for health insurance. Do you just pay for health insurance once, when you register for it? Do you pay $20 monthly? Does the price you pay go up when you add more medications? I’m confused.

When you get health insurance, there is what is called a premium. This is the amount you pay on a scheduled basis. For instance, if you get insurance through your employer, you would pay your part of the premium each payday.

If you pay your premiums on time, you get to keep your insurance. Now, when you use your insurance, there is what is called a deductible. This is an amount of money you must spend before the insurance starts paying anything. A typical deductible might be $250/year for the policy holder and $500/year for the family. So, if your dad had the policy and went to get a prescription, if it was his first prescription of the year and it cost $100, he would pay $100. Every time he used stuff under the plan, he would pay everything until he hit the $250 deductible, then the insurance would kick in. (the same goes for the family coverage, until the $500 was met by everybody in total – not separately – you would pay 100%).

Now, once the deductible is met, the insurance starts picking up some of the costs…usually the costs are based on what doctor or provider you use. If you use someone who is called "in network" the insurance company pays more of the bill. They do this because they have negotiated lower costs with that provider. For example, let’s say you need to have some tests done and your family has met all your deductibles. Let’s also say the tests normally cost $200. If you go to an in network provider, the insurance would cover 80%. If you go out of network, the insurance might only cover 70%. Now the nice thing is, by going in network, you get the discounted price, let’s say $160. So, if you go in network, you would pay $32 for the tests and the insurance would pay $128 (totaling $160). If you went out of network, you would pay the 30% of $200 or $60 and the insurance company would pay $140. So, by staying in-network, both you and your insurance company save money.

Also, there is something called an out-of-pocket maximum. This just means that if someone in your family gets real sick or injured, the most you can pay for that year is the out-of-pocket max…say $5,000. Once you hit that, everything after that is covered 100% by your insurance and you don’t pay anything.

Last, there is a co-pay – what this means is that if you go to the doctor for a routine visit, it is usually covered without worrying about the deductible and you pay just the co-pay. usually this is $15 or $20 on say a $100 office visit and the insurance company pays the rest (based on a negotiated amount).

And that’s the short version of how insurance works.

Hi,

I suffer from toenail fungus, and I’ve tried ALL Home remedies available without success. I’m also about to buy health insurance. I thought I would take this opportunity to finally visit the doctor and get rid of this problem. My questions are:

1. Which health insurance plans offer the best coverage to treat toenail fungus?
2. Do they cover the medication and the surgery required in some cases to remove the toenail?

Thank you for all your help!

most insurance will cover the costs you mention if the doctor thinks it is medically necessary.

I need 12 examples so a little help would be nice! Thanks so much to whoever helps. I really need it! By the way, by public health care I mean Canadian health care. So like, free health care but higher taxes.

I’m from California & I’m not sure about your question, but I’ll say some stuff I know. Half of my relatives are in Canada & although I’m poor, several of my Canadian Uncles, Cousins, etc., are doing quite well financially. Every one of them LOVE the health care in Canada & look with disgust at the USA. Health care in America is much more expensive & less available because it is a FOR PROFIT industry. Drugs are extremely overpriced & the insurance companies care about your health as much as they care about the stuff they just expelled into their toilets. They will DENY you coverage on anything. All they need to do is find an excuse to drop you, that is, when you make a claim. They’ve got the most educated lawyers who do nothing but try to save the Insurance companies money. We are the most backward "First World" country on this planet morally in regards to caring about it’s own citizens. Here is a site to look into. & there are many more on the internet. http://www.pnhp.org/facts/singlepayer_faq.php If you’re mostly concerned about Canada’s situation, keep looking on the web. I’m sure you’ll find something. And remember, insurance companies are only concerned with profit!

Though the recent campaign for presidency brought affordable health care into the limelight, many small business owners and their employees felt this struggle long before it gained public attention. One of President Obama’s campaign calling cards is his plan for affordable health care. Intertwined within the general theme of affordable health insurance was the more specific aid to assist small businesses in providing health care for their employees.

If California is any indication of the lack of affordable health care in small businesses created in the rest of the United States, there is a major problem. According to Small Businesses for Affordable Healthcare, out of all the Businesses in California, more than three million employees are uninsured. Those who do have the luxury of health insurance provided by their small business employers have faced a rise in premium costs at over fifty percent. These grim numbers have made small businesses in California less than an ideal place to work.

In January 2008, the House Committee on Small Business met with many small business owners and heard first hand of the obstacles often faced by countless entrepreneurs. Though close to fifty million individuals nationwide struggle with being uninsured, more than half of these are either employees of small business owners, or the employers who operate the businesses. The magnitude of these statistics is outrageous, and small business owners have tried, unsuccessfully thus far, to fight a seemingly never ending cycle.

Business are, unjustifiably so, having to make harsh decisions, such as laying off some employees in order to provide health insurance to those they choose to remain employed. Resources that should be spent developing and growing a business are instead being put to use dealing with the incredible amount of medical claim paperwork. Businesses are literally failing, in part, due to this health care crisis.

An article from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation cited business owners as listing health care costs to be the most important problem they deal with in the companies. Imagine beginning employed with a small business and having a particular health care plan. Then, as time goes by, the business you work for begins cutting various benefits out of your health care plan and asking you to pay more and more of the premiums. This is exactly what many small business employees face. Because of rising health care costs, employers are unable to keep up with existing plans. In order to keep the employees insured, sacrifices must be made.

Although developing policy that will provide affordable health care in small businesses is not necessarily a new venture, small business owners and their employees are putting their hope in the new presidential administration to finally “get the job done.” They wish to be able to offer a good, affordable health care plan to their employees and focus on growing the business. More than anything, they are fed up with having to make a decision between the two.

How it plays out, the world shall see.

Both socialzed and free market health care ration health care.

In socialized health care, care is rationed based upon bureaucratic decisions.
In "free market" Health care, care is rationed based upon the ability of the person to pay.

Which is more just?
Which is more just for a child?

Depends on the perspective. The "socialized" (please use in quotation marks) perspective is that users of health care are the community as a whole; thus, ‘just’ is defined as minimizing the losing individuals. "Free market’s" views are that the users are individuals or groups of individuals; thus, ‘just’ is defined as maximizing the number of individuals ’satisfied.’

From both common political and ethical perspective, a child is often unable to contribute to the discussion of ‘individuals to be lost’ in "socialized health care" or ‘user satisfaction’ in the "free market." Given the assumptions that pediatric care is satisfactory for most children, "socialized health care" is more just because the intrinsic cost-of-life-saved would then be higher even though some children would fall through the cracks. HOWEVER, given the assumption above and also that the income difference between the richest and poorest people is minimal, the "free market" is more just because parents can decide what is most ’satisfactory’ without too much undue financial burden.

How to Choose Your Health Insurance

Posted by admin | 08/03/10 | Tagged Health

There are essentially three types of health insurance: indemnity plans, managed care plans, and government-sponsored health insurance. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages based on the type of health insurance you are looking for.

Indemnity plans, also known as fee-for-service plans, require their policyholders to pay for their medical care as they go and are reimbursed by their healthcare provider either partially or in full. An indemnity plan does not restrict a patient’s choice of doctors or institutions. This is the best choice for someone who does not get sick much and needs a “basic and essential” health plan or someone who travels a lot and cannot always choose their doctors or institutions.

Managed care plans offer comprehensive health care in exchange for a regular premium. Health maintenance organizations (HMOs), point-of-service (POS), and preferred provider organizations (PPOs) are all types of managed care plans. Typically, these plans have a defined group of health service providers and if you do not receive treatment from these providers, it may not be covered. Managed care plans are the best choice for people who want a comprehensive health care plan that is typically provided through employers.

Government-sponsored health insurance is generally available to retirees, seniors, and people who cannot necessarily afford other health insurance plans. The most common forms of government-sponsored health insurance are Medicaid, Medicare, State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), Military Health Care, Indian Health Services, and State-specific Plans. If this sounds like the best option for you, check into each of them to see if you qualify.

There is a health insurance plan for everyone. Make sure to do lots of research before you come to a final decision on what type of plan is best for you.

America faces a health care crisis. How can Congress or the Senate much care if they have top notch health care coverage and the taxpayers pay for it?

They have a 100 percent covered plan for them and their families for life (assuming they serve at least 6 years), along with an excellent pension plan for life.

They will care about the crisis if it is something the voters want! After all, if they are not acting in the interest of the voters, they will lose their seat and their Health care plan.

Unfortunately, there is so much disagreement between the "left" and the "right" that it is difficult for congress to do anything. In addition, many people (even those who truly need health care reforms) vote based on moral values, leaving health care to be ignored.
