My husband is a food sales rep employee in which he also gives consultations/suggestions for restaurants. As a result, he eats at many of his customers’ restaurants to try their food or at potential customers’ restaurants. This should be tax deductible because it’s for his job in which he is trying their food and/or trying to promote business. However, I don’t think this would fall into the meal category which is only 50% deductible. Anyone know what category this would fall into?

If he’s eating at their restaurants with an eye towards promoting their restaurant, THEY should be paying for the meals.

Meals taken in the vicinity of your tax home are not deductible. A food critic might have an argument but your hubby does not.

Your pet dog requires your attention and love as it is your unique companion. Whenever your dog suffers from some ailment or sickness, you suffer too. Many a time, it becomes difficult to track down the cause of these ailments, and your vet might claim that it is due to food allergies. 10% of dogs who suffer from allergies, suffer from food allergies.

Food allergies can cause a great amount of alarm to the owner. Incase your dog is itching or scratching excessively, it might be suffering from some food allergy.

Corn, soy and wheat are the largest food allergy culprits. There are some dogs who have an allergy to chicken and beef. The best course of action would be to take your dog to a vet and have him diagnosed. A vet will be able to accurately tell you the exact nature of the problem and the remedies for it.

If you find that your dog is excessively and compulsively licking his foot or chewing and biting at other parts of his body, then you can safely suspect that he suffers from an allergy. Vets and pet nutritionists usually recommend substituting your dogs protein source. Often, lambs are introduced for accommodating a new substance in the diet.

You could begin by giving allergy-free mixes to control the diet of your dog. These mixes usually contain nutrients and vitamins formulated especially for dogs. You can also experiment with other protein sources while keeping track of how your dog reacts to it. You must remember to closely watch your dog’s reaction to new food in order to determine whether it suits him or not.

There are many chicken-based dog mixes, while many others contain fish proteins. You should change your dog’s source of protein once in a while to observe the reaction. When you find one that suits your dog and reduce the allergies, stick to it.

You should remember a few things before introducing your dog to a new food. Do it slowly over a period of six days. Always mix the new food with the old food in the ration 1:4 where 4 is the old food. Gradually do this till the sixth day, by which time you would have completely changed your dogs diet. Give this food for a week at least and observe carefully the different reactions your dog develops due to the change.

There is no remedy for overcoming an allergy overnight. The food cycle should be broken beginning with neutral foods that are grain free. After you have found the correct protein source, you could reintroduce the same grain again and observe the effect. Always use common sense; you can save a lot of money if you do things by yourself. Never forget that your dog needs to be fed a well balanced diet that prescribes the correct amounts of minerals and vitamins.

This process of making your dog adjust to a particular food agent coupled with the antibody response taking place within your dog’s intestine are still not understood entirely. However, most nutritionists and vets can recognize and diagnose symptoms correctly in order to treat them.

Therefore, there are many alternatives available to your while choosing the right food for your dog if you not want to go for allergy free foods. Invest some time, common sense and patience, and you will see results.

What human food treats do you feed your cat?

Posted by admin | 14/05/10 | Tagged Food

I make wet cat food and stick to foods I know are fine for cats. Like Human Grade Turkey Liver, Chicken Liver, Chicken Thighs and Boneless Salmon, Peas and Carrots. What other Foods would you suggest to put in there? I tried Sweet Potato and Butternut Squash and it worked as well:)
I do feed dry food, they get homemade wet food because of the bad preservatives and fillers like corn and wheat.

My cat loves to eat lots of human food if you can spare them some chicken not raw or maybe some roast lamb, but if you don’t have that they love Tuna or my cats favourite ham and luncheon
Hope this helps
cheers

Hello,

I have a 7 year old, neutered male cat. Should I start feeding him senior formulated cat food? I also have a 4 year old female. She would be too young to eat senior food. I free feed them by putting their daily amount of food in their bowls and leaving it out all day. So, would it make a difference if I feed him senior food? He will probably snack on her food, and she on his.

Thank you.

I really wouldn’t worry at this stage. If something arises during the annual vet trips, then it can be addressed.

My cats range from over 141/2 years to slightly over 2 years in age. They all get the same food, and they are all doing fine.

When I was at Home we had a cat that lived to be over 23 years, and he didn’t have any different diet than when he was young.

All parents want their children to have everything they need. As a parent, you would want your child to get the very best, which is why you might be willing to work hard in order to meet your children’s needs and demands. You are willing to work as hard as possible so that your child has the best living conditions, delicious foods and all the nutrition he or she requires. You also want them to go the best schools and have all the toys they wish to play with.

As is evident, any parent would naturally be interested in the growth, health and happiness of their child. Then it is no surprise that parents get worried and anxious when their children fall sick. Presently, there are a number of children who suffer from food allergy that can severely affect their way of life.

When it comes to child food allergy, great care must be taken regarding what the child eats. The child’s eating should be monitored carefully. As children are innocent and do not have a clue about the kind of food that is good for them and the kind of food that is bad for them, it becomes your duty to watch what the child eats. However, if your child is now a school going kid, you must not forget that his classmates might eat food to which your child is allergic. You should never forget that children like to taste everything and there is nothing keeping him away from allergic foods. You cannot always keep your eye on your child, and he is likely to trip somewhere along t he way.

Firstly, histamines trigger the occurrence of allergies. Usually histamines are found inside animal dander, pollens and also in some foods. There are many people who are allergic to different kinds of food and they need to exercise extra caution. It will also be beneficial for you if you learn how exactly allergies work. every time your child takes in histamine, allergic reactions are triggered. Normally considered harmless, histamine can cause the white blood cells and the immune system attacks the histamine. This can also cause sneezing, a running nose and different swellings located at different places. The body considers this to be a mechanism of self defense against harmful substances in the body.

Some children suffer form such sever food allergy that their entire life is affected by it. In some instances of allergy attacks, your child might have to be taken to a hospital. This is the reason why it becomes necessary for you to identify the kind of food your child is allergic to.

Normally, children suffer allergy due to histamines present in shellfish and peanuts. They might develop allergic reactions to other food items, shellfish and peanuts are the main items that trigger allergies.

Identifying the cause of allergic attacks in your child’s body is another way of keeping track of your child’s diet. However, it is recommended that you seek a pediatrician’s advice in order to determine the allergens triggering off attacks in your child’s body, as they are medically qualified to conduct the tests necessary for quick and accurate diagnosis. Your pediatrician will conduct a series of examinations in the lab including skin tests in order to locate the cause of the allergy.

If your child suffers from food allergies, you should follow all the above instructions and find out what food your child is allergic to in order to give him or her a normal life.

What inexpensive food gives energy and brain power?

Posted by admin | 11/05/10 | Tagged Food

I have an office job that is very fast paced. I find that the food I’m eating, which is usually fast food, gives me a severe downer right after lunch. I can’t afford to be lethargic at work at any time.

What inexpensive Foods give energy and brain power? Thanks.

Believe it or not….peanut butter! Slap some on an english muffin and the protein from the pb, and the carbs from the em, should get you through the rest of the day! ; )

I enjoy many different foods. You can give me recipes, anywhere from appetizers to main dishes to desserts or even drinks like smoothies and such. Thanks! =)

There are some great websites where you can get pretty much any recipe you want! Here are a few:

Good luck, and enjoy!

I know what is ethnic Food, exotic food, vegetarian food, but I don“t know what is brand food?

Brand food is a "name brand" like Kellogg’s, Betty Crocker, Campbell’s etc…the food brand is each stores "generic" for the same food at a lesser price. Be careful…some food brand items do not have the same quality. It is all just trial and error. :-) Hope I helped.

We adopted a cat that was a stray. I bought her some cheap dry cat Food. After a week she started throwing it up and won’t eat it any more. She will eat soft cat food but is still throwing up. What should I feed her? I tried mixing rice in her soft food but that didn’t work.

If your kitty has a sensitive stomach your may want to try a presciption cat food, IE Science Diet Sensitive Stomach
Or…we had this same problem with our pet, and the only food he could keep down was meat baby food (Gerbers chicken, turkey, veal) mixed with rice cereal baby food. We ended up feeding him this 10 years.
But definately, have the vet check out your kitten.
Hope things go better!

What Are “Food Miles” And How Does it Affect You?

Posted by admin | 04/05/10 | Tagged Food

As more and more people are taking a hard look at the effects that pollution is having on our planet, new terminology is emerging.

The term sustainable development encompasses the concept of using our resources wisely so that we can enjoy them, but they will also be available for future generations.

Another term that has been showing up in the worldwide lexicon is “food miles”. Before the industrial revolution, food was grown and consumed locally. What food wasn’t grown at home was obtained at local farmers markets, or using the barter system.

As the world is becoming globalized, the ease in which food can be transported is having a major impact on the environment. The transportation of that food can use a tremendous amount of fossil fuel. “Food miles” is the total distance that food goods are transported from the field or source of manufacture to the consumer. This term has become an indicator of sustainability, and has sparked a movement towards using foods produced and consumed locally.

Recent studies are showing that the globalization within the food industry has resulted in more and more products being imported from foreign companies. This has greatly increased the “food miles” a product travels, and substantially increases the amount of pollution that is generated.

In an effort to supply consumers with fresh food, the use of the airplane to transport that food has greatly increased. Since air transportation produces far greater greenhouse gasses than ships, this also has a negative effect on our environment.

Long distance transportation also requires more packaging since consumers will not buy bruised foods. Packaging made from cardboard, paper and plastics use more of our natural resources such as trees and fossil fuels. The increased packaging also requires that more trees be cut down, destroying wildlife habitat. Then the packaging ends up in our landfills when it is discarded. This creates a vicious course that harms the environment.

Consumers need to be aware of where their food originates. Packing will often tell what country produced the product you are planning to purchase. Buying fruits and vegetables that are “in season” often means that that they are locally produced and travel less miles to get to market. Choosing apples from New York State is preferred over buying them from New Zealand.

Buying locally is part of the key. It not only helps the economy by supporting our local growers, it is better for the environment. The trend is to buy “organic” but if that food comes from South America, the benefit to the environment is minimized.

The other benefit of purchasing locally is that the produce is fresher, so you are getting Healthier food that contains fewer preservatives. Often the cost is less because we are not paying for the cost of transportation, packaging, advertising and all the chemical additives.

If as a consumer you wish to lower your carbon footprint, your best option is to purchase most products that have been produced within a thirty mile radius, choose products that are not damaging to the environment and purchase products from the areas where they grow best.

During World Wars I and II, citizens were asked to plant victory gardens. These gardens produced over one third of all the vegetables consumed in the country. Maybe it’s time to go back to the “good old days” and consider planting gardens to grow our own vegetables to help the environment.

In time, as technology improves, buying from overseas will not hurt the environment. Many countries rely heavily on the exportation of food goods to other countries, so a shift to purchasing locally grown food could be devastating to these countries.
