I don’t hate cooking, but I hate the inconvenience. A few times a week, I don’t mind. But I dread the thought of cooking dinner every day. One Thanksgiving I was doing the turkey and my mom just insisted that I teach my younger sister how to do it. So, I started narrating what I was doing, and she was totally disinterested. I kept going, regardless of her bored sighs and eye rolling. Finally, she looked at me and said, "You’re not even talking to ME anymore, are you?" What can I make with cooking apples?

I just went to the farmer’s market for some produce. I bought some cooking apples, not even realizing they were cooking kind. Just thought they were another variety to eat raw. I have never used cooking apples, and I’m not even that big a fan of cooked apples. I have 8 apples. What can I make with them? I’m looking more for healthier recipes if there is anything. And also would prefer not to use the oven in the summer.

Any suggestions?

SLOW COOKED APPLE BUTTER

10-12 lg. cooking apples (14 c.), chopped
2 c. apple juice or apple cider
3 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves

Core and chop unpeeled apples. Combine with apple juice or cider in slow cooker; add sugar. (Pot may be filled to top.) Cover; cook on low setting for 10 hours or on high setting for 4 hours. Put apples into blender; blend on high speed until smooth.

Return apples to slow cooker; add spices. Cook on low setting for 1 hour or until mixture reaches desired consistency. For very thick apple butter, remove lid while cooking. Ladle into six sterilized half-pint jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace. Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath for 10 minutes. Apple butter will keep several weeks in refrigerator.

BLACKBERRY AND APPLE JAM

2 lb. cooking apples
2/3 c. water
1/2 c. lemon juice
2 lb. blackberries
4 lb. sugar

Peel and core and slice the apples. Put the apples into a saucepan with the water and lemon juice and simmer for about 10 minutes or until tender. Add the blackberry and sugar and cook, stirring constantly, over a low heat until the sugar is dissolved.

Bring to a boil and boil rapidly until the setting point is reached. Pour into warm sterilized jars and seal immediately.

APPLE CINNAMON PORK CHOPS

2-4 boneless pork chops (example: butterfly cut)
2 apples, peeled, sliced (Granny Smith are good)
1 can frozen apple juice concentrate
1 cup applesauce
cinnamon
nutmeg (optional)
salt and pepper
potatoes cut coarsely in chunks
1 heavy bottomed deep frying pan and lid

Cut the potatoes and set aside; peel and slice apples and set aside.

Heat the frying pan WITHOUT OIL (do not use oil in this recipe). Sprinkle salt, pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg on 1 side of the pork chops.

Place the seasoned side down on the hot pan and sear the meat for 1-2 minutes.

Meanwhile, season the side face up with salt, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg. Flip the chops and sear the side you just seasoned for 1 minute.

Now add the can of apple juice and apple sauce, being sure to scrape loose the fried bits (fond) which is stuck to the pan – this adds extra flavor.

Add the apples and potatoes. Put the lid on.

Cook until apples and potatoes have become tender.

Need cooking/baking temp,how long,& if flipping is needed.Also what to cook them or flavor them is a plus,but I dont plan to batter them or do anything too fancy.

Well I will tell you one of my favorites . Saute some onion and celery in butter ( real stuff no fake ) once translucent put in parsley and rosemary and tarragon . stir 1 min. add a handful of bread crumbs or more if you are making more than one . Stir until moistened . Remove from heat . Rinse and dry your bass . Beat an egg roll your bass in it then into the bread crumb mixture and place in baking dish . Spray with Cooking spray or drizzle with olive oil and bake at 350 for 15 – 20 min.

Cooking a steak with limited utensils?

I need some help Cooking my porterhouse. Normally I either grill it outside, or use a cast iron skillet.

I don’t have any of those at the moment, so I ask you. How would you cook a 1 1/2 inch bone in, porterhouse steak? I have all the spices, but I can either cook it in a non stick skillet, or in the broiler.

How would you cook the steak, and how long would you cook a 1 1/2 bone in steak to get it medium to medium rare?

Grilling is the best option but seeing as you don’t have that luxury at the moment i can offer you this advice. Most of the time at any major chain like lets say Outback or Longhorns they use a flat iron to cook your steaks anyway. Broiling has a tendency to dry out thick cuts of meat. Searing it will lock in the flavors. The key is finding the right temperature on your stove-top. Depending on how you want your steak cooked you would want to use a slightly lower temperature for higher degrees of doneness throughout. Or a higher temperature to sear the outside quickly and lock in the goodness. Make sure that your using butter in the bottom of the pan and another tablespoon when you flip. A good pinch of regular old salt hear and there on a steak can add a tremendous amount of flavor as well. Good luck!
