Can you sell a home with vivid interior paint colors?

Posted by admin | 29/01/10 | Tagged Home

Hi. I have a home that was new construction. It was originally painted white. I absolutely hate white and tan walls. All of the rooms have color, and when I say color I mean eggplant purple, red, hunter green…The home’s floorplan is very boxy, each room is a box and there aren’t many halls, so character definition is paramount. If the home was just white, or tan, it would be one large big box. Plus, I am a ‘vivid’ person so I wanted my home to reflect who I am, not following the latest trend. I’ve read that such colors are a turnoff to buyers. Is that true? I don’t want to repaint it tan when it is time to sell because it would cost thousands (the home is over 4500 sq ft). It has been my understanding, at least for me personally, that what helps sell a home is if the buyer sees something in it that they like. There’s got to be people who can appreciate color.

Sure, there are many people who appreciate color: THEIR colors, that THEY choose. If you don’t want to paint every room, I would paint the ‘family rooms’; the kitchen, living room, and den soft calming colors. They don’t have to be starch white, but a beige or nearwhite grey would do.

You want people to be able to see this as "their" home when you sell it; help them imagine this.

I have to make a power point about a health care problem for a statistics class and include a frequency table, which means I need actual numbers, not percentages as most statistic information is portrayed. Does anyone know what would be a good health-related topic where I could find actual numbers easily? Or any good websites for health-related data?

The Robert Woods Johnson Foundation is a research think tank. They have all kinds of references to interesting research around health care and health reform. With a little digging, you may be able to contact some of the researchers.

How to get savvy with gardening?

Posted by admin | 29/01/10 | Tagged Gardening

Every time I buy a houseplant or look something up that’s related to any kind of gardening I get completely lost in all the terminology, latin names, etc.

I’d like to get better at gardening and growing things without having to get my degree in horticulture. Are there any sources (websites/books) for beginners who don’t understand all the "big words" ?

What I did was to go to the local library, and grab a large stack of books on gardening. Ones with pictures are more inspiring. Out of a stack of 10 or so, there would be at least a couple that seemed to "speak" to me. Reading was not over my head, good visuals, and I actually learned things, or at least got ideas.

It’s a great way to spend a winter, when there’s not much going on outside.

I am looking at replacing my living room furniture this year and I need some suggestions? First, we have 2 cats (and yes they sometimes scratch the ends of the sofa and loveseat that we have now-in fact it looks horrible) 2. The upholstery fabic we have now has piles all over it? I don’t want to go down that road again when we choose new living room furniture. The room it will go in will be sat on constantly (no formal living room in my house) and occasionally napped on. I need suggestions. I not not going to spend a fortune on the new furniture, but I would be willing to spend some extra for it to last for at least 5-7 years (if not longer). Any feedback would be appreciated.

Yes leather is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I have leather in the vehicle i drive and put some cloth seat covers on them. If you have cats they will ruin that leather. I have a cat long haired and she sheds on my furniture. I keep a blanket or sheet where she likes to sleep .. Its hard when you have cats. But i had rather have cloth at least you can use one of those sticky roller brushes and get most of it up. I have had the same sectional sleeper sofa for 10 yrs now.and it still looks good.

I’m a senior, and for my senior project I am putting together a food bank. The food collected is donated food from other students, and the remains of the cafeteria food. It is all packaged, so there’s no worry. The food is to to go the needy students, of this campus. However, keeping every individual under consideration, how do I go about this food bank without offending any of the students? I’m sure a few would like to remain anonymous, because they’d be too embarrassed to publicize their necessity for food. So, how do I make it anonymous? Any tips, or ideas?

To be honest, I’m not sure you can. Once you publicize the food bank as being available, you almost certainly have to have someone supervising the room containing all the food to be sure no one trashes the place or contaminates the food. If just one person is in charge, that’s probably about the closest you can get to anonymity. The other option would be to offer the food online (using the high school computers) and the needy student could indicate an address for it to be shipped (the student could use his own Home, a relative’s, or a friend’s place)… bottom line… you really wouldn’t know who would benefit in this case.

What type of careers in Finance would be best suites to e filled by a lawyer or law school grad? Investment banking, mergers and acquisitions, securities law…? Also, what do you think of these career paths in such a crazy time, and how in demand do you predict these positions will be in 4 years?

Reminder: We are in a World-wide Recession.

Warning> Jobs in the field of Law are drying up fast!! This is just not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING vocational field. Many reasons. Many people today (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work, thanks to the Internet. Also, we simply already have way too many Legal Professionals – we have an absolute glut!! ("Legal Professionals" includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc)

Regarding being a Paralegal: Employers (usually law firms) in the field of Law today want employees with Bachelors degrees from traditional colleges/universities. Those "certificates" you see advertised aren’t worth the paper they are printed on – they are generally scams. (I found this out the hard way.)

Cost of law school to be lawyer, approx $150,000+.
Be prepared to take on a lot of debt.

Even if you finish law school, you won’t be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work "down" as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of their bills paid <<this would be your competition. And the competition is fierce!!

Now… the law schools know this, but they won’t tell you the truth >that the job market/economy is just saturated with way too many Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will lie to you. The root of the problem is we have too many law schools. We are in a recession, and the schools are fighting for their own survival – they will tell students anything to get to the students’ money. (Which is why they won’t tell you the truth about the job market for the field of Law.) And these schools continue to recruit and churn out even more graduates………….

If you don’t believe me, then just do a search here on Yahoo Answers to see what other posters are saying about the current status of the field of Law. Call some local law firms – ask to speak to the Manager of Human Resources – ask them if they are hiring; ask them what they think about job availability in the field of Law………………

In the book "So You Want to be a Lawyer?" by Marianne Calabrese and Susanne Calabrese (ISBN 0-88391-136-1): "The United States has more lawyers than any other country in the world. About 38,000 students graduate >each year< from the 200+ law schools in the United States. The competition is very keen for jobs and clients." – Even Associate Justice Antonin Scalia (who served on the U.s. Supreme Court for more than 20 years) says there are too many lawyers. (9/14/2008)

If you want a job when you are done with your studies, consider and look into the field of >>>Healthcare! I spoke to a career counselor from Jobs and Family Services, and HE told me that this is where the jobs are, and future job availability! and scholarships!

Good luck.

What is the best fashion magazine for young adults?

Posted by admin | 29/01/10 | Tagged Fashion

I recently moved to US and wants to know what the best fashion magazine is for a young adult like me. I am 23, so really cannot relate to cosmogirl or seventeen anymore. I love to dress up and follow Fashion trends. I want to subscribe to a magazine where I can find the hottest hairstyle, or latest fashion on clothes, shoes or bags. I am looking for a more mature version of seventeen/cosmogirl.

Teen Vogue for sure! :)

But Seventeen is still good for young adults too, I think.

How do you think dieting is becoming more mcdonaldized or socialized. Suddenly it seems all women are dieting in some way, and corporate america has caught onto this creating diet programs, diet pills, and all that jazz for women. Do you know of any other ways dieting has becoming mcdonaldized?

Corporate America is feeding into our desire to eat healthier but I’m not so sure that we really are eating Healthier because if you analyze the content of some of those "diet" meals then they’re not all that healthy.

But it gives people the illusion that they’re eating more healthy so people don’t really look into whether an item is all that healthy. For example, products may say "No Sugar Added" but the darn things already were loaded with sugar to begin with. However, stupid consumers buy it anyway and tell themselves that they’re "eating healthy."

Some items have reduced the sugar but, in order to keep it tasty, increased the fat! How is THAT healthy? See what I mean?

By the way, nice avatar!
